When you
see a car like the Mosler MT900, you cannot fail to be impressed. Its
stylish lines and distinctive sound turns heads everywhere you go.
Underneath the sleek bodywork, the knowledge and experience of Breckland
Technology have developed the chassis for race winning sports car and
a road legal super car.
Based in East Derham near Norwich, Breckland Technologies have established
a high quality design and manufacturing facility for the low volume
production of cars such as the Mosler.
Engineering Manager Jim Gordon comments “All of our mechanical
design work was previously carried out using AutoCAD 2D until we moved
to SolidWorks. The amount of commercial design companies using SolidWorks
proved that it could deliver real world benefits for our business and
it has over delivered on our expectations. In our business, time is
absolutely critical and we have virtually eliminated the need for 2D
drawings. We can also send the models to suppliers who can manufacture
directly from the 3D model, thus reducing time and cost. In some cases
we have reduced our product development timescales by 80% enabling
us to respond quickly to the needs of our customers.”
Benefits of SolidWorks to Breckland Technologies
Working in SolidWorks helps to promote a much-improved understanding
of the proposed design, especially with so many interconnecting struts,
which are very difficult to visualise in 2 dimensions. Manufacturing
can gain a deeper understanding and contribute to the suitability of
the design early in the process, thus enabling an improved design and
the reduction of mistakes in production. Design errors are virtually
eliminated as dynamic movement enables the simulation of real world
conditions.
E-drawings have proved to be invaluable when discussing design issues
with suppliers, enabling them to view components and assemblies as
a 3D model, even allowing manipulation of assembly components to help
them understand the design.
Direct links with subcontract manufacturing companies reduce time and
cost for precision-machined parts. The sheet metal functionality automatically
creates the flat pattern with bend angles for the CNC press break and
the DXF File is created and sent directly for laser profiling.
