Innova Systems trained members of Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) in using Solidworks. CUER are a student society that build and race solar cars to compete in the World Solar Challenge – a biannual race 3000 km across Australia. Last year’s team have just competed for the first time in October 2009, coming a respectable 14th out of 25 cars, and were the only British team to enter. Most of the technical work involved in the design is covered by fourth year engineering students, as projects that account for half of their marks for the year. Many of those who attended the training were fourth year project students on the Aero and Mechanical teams.
The Innova team carefully guided the Engineers with the best practice modelling techniques that would be used to generate the latest modified configuration of the vehicle. The training was tailored to CUER’s specific needs: the basics of generating 3D models were covered, as well as certain, more advanced topics. The training was completed by Innova's Certified ProfessionaI training team, lead by Isabelle Edmundson, and guided the team knowledgably and and with great skill of SolidWorks. This training will be useful both to analyse the CAD model inherited from last year’s team, and in the design of next year’s car. The complete product definition of the car will be defined in Solidworks, at every iteration of the design process. The Aero team found it particularly helpful, as they have the difficult task of designing and optimizing the outer shell of the car, which because of the complex surfaces is a very challenging task.
We wish the team great success this year!
